Why does every business – large or small – need a website?
When I meet with a client, one of my first questions is “Why do you want a website?” and their answer is usually fairly vague and along the lines of “Well, everyone has to have a website, right?” It is a generally accepted idea today that if you have a business, you need a website, but not everyone is sure why. And not everyone is clear what their website will do for their business. Because of this general vagueness many business owners make one of the following mistakes:
- Place a website very low on their list of priorities, so low that somehow it never seems to get done.
- Create it themselves, or get a friend who knows something about websites to create it, and end up with an amateurish website. We like to call these “I’m outta here” websites because they drive customers away so very effectively!
- Get a professional website built but never use it to its full potential.
So why do you need a website?
- For a significant portion of the population, the web is where they go to look for businesses and information. Some interesting figures:
- 92 percent of people look online for information.
- There are over 7 billion searches on the internet every month and a significant portion of these are people searching for local businesses.
- Your website is an excellent, affordable and dynamic marketing tool.
- You can provide in-depth information and there is no limit on space.
- A website is targeted marketing. People who land there, are generally looking for what you have to offer.
- A website gives you a chance to really sell what you have and who you are. A well-crafted “About” page allows a consumer to get a real feel for the ethos of your company. A professional website can give a customer a sense of confidence in the professionalism of your business and testimonials can be used as great tools to inspire trust in your company.
- If you use your website to its full potential, it will always be new and fresh, and will keep your customers returning to it, thereby keeping them as your customer.
- Web marketing is more affordable, and arguably, more effective than print marketing.
- Changes are cheaper – build it on a content-managed platform and they are free!
- You can use your website as a tool to collect email addresses and build yourself an email database to replace or augment your print mailings.
- An online catalogue has no limits on space.
- Convenient for your customer, a website makes it easier for a customer to do business with you! They can:
- Find out about your company.
- Contact you through a contact form any time of the day or night.
- Get directions/find your contact details easily and quickly.
- Be empowered to find the information they want quickly and easily, thereby making them a more satisfied customer. Online information sharing also means they can get their questions answered without having to meet in person. That’s also a bonus for you, helping you save on travel and staff expenses.
